Alan Kitching

October 20, 2009

I actually discovered Alan’s work whilst conducting research for my foundation year art and design course.

I must admit in foundation year I was never really interested in typography and was not even to sure of what it meant however Alan’s work instantly caught my eye. It essentially makes typography art, the textures, styles and colors even the experimental layouts , now in my second year of vis-com I appreciate his work more than ever, id love one of his posters!!! I conducted research to see how Alan produces his work and learnt the following on a website “Alan Kitching is one of the world’s foremost practitioners of letterpress typographic design and printmaking. He is renowned for his expressive use of wood and metal letterforms in creating visuals for commissions and his own limited edition prints. He has shown in London and Barcelona, and contributed to various exhibitions in Europe including the Pompidou Centre Paris, the British Library and the Barbican Art Gallery London. Alan is visiting tutor in typography at The Royal College of Art and Visiting Professor, University of the Arts London. He lives and works in Kennington London with designer, writer and partner Celia Stothar.”

Me illustration project

July 20, 2009

In this assignment we had to express our personality using a match box and watever media we liked but it always had to fold back into a match box!!!

I made this 3d relief rebellious colorful punk style face and covered it with thumbnail images of things in my life, that make me, me. The project was fun but at the time it felt a little pointless and abstract, all our match boxes looked good together on the wall though. (sorry about the poor picture quality).

Book cover designs…

July 20, 2009

One of our/my university assignments last term was to design four book cover designs for two different books. The book cover designs were supposed to express the story, we could use any media we liked, It was a really enjoyable project and I learnt loads along the way. I liked my designs and wanted to share them with you…

All of the book cover designs were hand drawn and scanned in, then edited on photoshop. I tried to make the designs reflect the theme of the story or show a scene described in the story.

These are some posters I made for one of my foundation assignments (pick lyrics and make an A3 poster that expresses them creatively) nearly two years ago now, god im getting old. Anyway  I still really like them and remember really enjoying the project at the time, plus im trying to learn how to upload images on here.  My younger sister was my model and bear in mind I was just getting use to photoshop.

Ok so today (18th of JuIy) I have created this blog and whilst I am finding it very confusing I hope to make sense of it soon, bare with me people.
